About Institute for Curriculum and Learning Innovation of Universitas Sumatera Utara

On May 31, 1986, Vice Rector I, Prof. Dr. Mariam Darus Badrulzaman, S.H., invited the Curriculum Specialist, Dr. Thomas V. Telder, to present the plan to establish an Educational Development Unit at the USU level, which was approved for curriculum development, implementation of educational instruction, improvement and development of teaching staff, student evaluation, improvement/development of educational materials, audio-visual services and procurement of materials, referrals, and conducting training/seminars for teaching staff.
The Education Development Unit of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (UPP-USU) was born on April 1, 1987, with Rector Decree No. 2236/PTO5.H/SK/1.87 by the Rector of the Universitas Sumatera Utara Prof. M. Jusuf Hanafiah. The building formerly used by the USU Senate on Alumni Street No. 1 was handed over to UPP in 1989. Now, this building has officially become the UPP-USU Office. UPP-USU has changed its name to the Institute for Curriculum and Learning Innovation (LINKUP).

Prof. Dr. Dwi Suryanto, M.Sc., is an active lecturer at the Biological Sciences Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at the Universitas Sumatera Utara. Currently, his last education is S3 (Doctoral). After completing his education at the Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), he achieved this degree. Meanwhile, two other educational degrees are Drs. (S1 / Bachelor's degree) and also M.Sc. (S2 / Master's degree). He holds a bachelor's degree obtained after completing his education at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, while his M.Sc. (master's degree) he got after completing his education at Michigan State University, United States. In 2021, Prof. Dr. Dwi Suryanto, M.Sc., was officially appointed as Head of the Institute for Curriculum and Learning Innovation (LINKUP) of the Universitas Sumatera Utara from 2021 to 2026.

1978

With the issuance of Rector Decree No. 124/PT05/SK/C/78 dated August 28, 1978, the education sector began to carry out its activities.

1980

In 1980, a Credit System Management Team (TPSK) was formed consisting of Dr. Sugito Husodowijoyo, Purwanto, S.H., the late Nurjulisman, Drs. Yusran, and Ir. Fachrijas. To develop the Credit System, Dr. Sugito Husodowijoyo was sent to Bogor Agricultural University (April 28-29, 1981) and to Gajah Mada University (April 30-May 1, 1980) to conduct comparative studies. In July 1980, Dr. H. Mulkan Yahya and Dr. Sugito Husodowijoyo were sent to the University of Sains Malaysia in Penang Island, Malaysia.

1981

In 1981, the Chairman of TPSK invited Prof. Hashim and Noelogle from the University of Sains Malaysia to the University of North Sumatra to provide information on the credit system, then TPSK developed a credit system upgrading in the field of guardianship / registration administration / evaluation on March 31, 1980. In 1981, TPSK actively conducted upgrading / workshop on educational objectives and upgrading / workshop on educational measurement, each as much as 2 batches In 1981, Prof. T. Amin Ridwan and Abduh, S.H. were assigned to Jakarta to prepare for the implementation of the Teaching Deed V coordinated by the Directorate General of Higher Education.

1982

On February 10-13, 1982, Dr. Sugito Husodowijoyo attended the Tutor Training for Teaching Deed Program V in Jakarta. Akta V upgrading activities for USU teaching staff were held from 1982 to 1986 under the coordination of TPSK, assisted by administrative staff, including Sumarmi, S.H. and Rohani Sembiring, S.H.

1984

During this period, the University of North Sumatra also realized cooperation with MUCIA-USA with Asian Development Bank Loan (ADB) funds. In early 1984, USU prepared to receive MUCIA consultants who would be assisted by USU's “Counterpart”. For the curriculum field, with the Decree of the Rector of USU No. 8293/PTO5/SK/C.84 dated June 11, 1984, Dra. Hayati Chalil from the Faculty of Letters and Prof. Helena Siregar from the Faculty of Medicine were appointed as “Counterparts” of MUCIA consultants.

1985

In mid-1985, Dra. Hayati Chalil who was studying at LC, Singapore was replaced by Dr. Sugito Husodowijoyo. The first workshop was held at the Faculty of Medicine, assisted by Dr. Pangaribuan Siregar and Dr. Herwinta F. Eyanoer. After the Faculty of Medicine conducted the workshop, other faculties organized workshops with the aim of improving their respective curricula.

1986

The appointment of the Curriculum Development Team of the University of North Sumatra with Rector Decree No. 052/PT05/SK/Q.86 dated February 17, 1986 was carried out by the Rector of the University of North Sumatra to consider the presentation of the Education Program at USU using the Semester Credit System. Meanwhile, the Director General of Higher Education has set the Core Curriculum for each faculty in the University, State Institute in Indonesia. Reporting by Dr. Sugito Husodowijoyo on April 18, 1986 contains the activities of the Curriculum Development Task Force Team to the Academic Planning Management and the Curriculum Development Task Force Team with the PDs of the faculties to form a Curriculum Team at the USU level with the submission of the Term of Reference for the Curriculum Team Proposal by Dr. Telder. The result of the discussion was an agreement to establish a permanent unit for the development of education at USU. The activities of the Curriculum Development Task Force Team continued with preparations for the activation of UPP per faculty, even though the ADB Project had ended. On May 31, 1986, Assistant Rector I, Prof. Dr. Mariam Darus Badrulzaman, S.H., invited Curriculum Specialist, Dr. Thomas V. Telder, to convey that the plan to establish an Educational Development Unit at the USU level had been approved for curriculum development, implementation of educational instruction, improvement and development of teaching staff, student evaluation, improvement/development of educational materials, audio-visual services and material procurement, referrals, and conducting training/seminars for teaching staff.

1987

The existing task force team will become permanent members of the unit and one of them will be appointed as director/head. This idea is intended so that the activities of the Curriculum Development Task Force do not stop even though the ADB Project has ended. The issuance of the Decree of the Rector of the University of North Sumatra No. 116/PTO5.H/SK/I/87 dated February 20, 1987 stated the dissolution of all Task Forces within the University of North Sumatra. The Rector's Decree implicitly included the revocation of Decree No. 054/PTO54/PTO5/SK/Q.86 dated February 17, 1986 concerning the Curriculum Development Task Force. The Education Development Unit of the University of North Sumatra (UPP-USU) was born on April 1, 1987 with Rector Decree No. 2236/PTO5.H/SK/1.87 by the Rector of the University of North Sumatra, Prof. M. Jusuf Hanafiah.

1989

Because UPP does not yet have its own office, meetings and meetings are held at the Education Development Agency (BPP) of the USU Faculty of Medicine. Then it moved to the PELITA-USU office. In 1989, the building formerly used by the USU Senate on Alumni Street 1 was handed over to UPP. Until now this building has officially become the UPP-USU Office. After Decree 236/PT05.H/SK/1/87, there have been 3 changes in UPP staff/managers.
